Should a seamless pattern be RGB or CMYK for printing?
There is no universal rule that every printed pattern must be converted to CMYK before delivery. The correct choice depends on the printer, process, RIP, profile, substrate, and file specification. Preserve the master, obtain the vendor’s instructions, and make one controlled conversion in the production chain.
Ask who owns the color conversion
Commercial printers may request a specific CMYK profile, accept tagged RGB files and convert them through a RIP, or provide a custom profile for a material. Desktop photo and sublimation systems often expect RGB input because their drivers perform the device conversion. Sending generic CMYK merely because the destination is physical can reduce available color without matching the actual press.
